چکیده

We examine whether the Coase conjecture [7, 14, 4, 10] is robust against slight ability of commitment of the monopolist not to sell the durable goods to consumers. We quantify the commitment ability in terms of the speed that the durable goods perish, while keeping the time between the o ers small. We demonstrate that the slight commitment capability makes a substantial di erence by constructing two kinds of reservation price equilibria [10] that refute the Coase conjecture. In the rst equilibrium, the monopolist can credibly delay to make an acceptable o er. All consumers are served, but only after extremely long delay. Most of gains from trading is discounted away, and the resulting outcome is extremely ine cient. In the second equilibrium, the monopolist's expected pro t can be made close to the static monopoly pro t, if the goods perish very slowly. By focusing on the reservation price equilibria, we rigorously eliminate any source of reputational e ect. In fact, by using the rst kind of reservation price equilibrium as a credible threat against the seller, we can construct many other reputational equilibria [2] to obtain the Folk theorem. Various extensions and applications are discussed.

Modeling The Economics of Differentiated Durable-Goods Markets

© Due to the time constraint, the paper was completed in a rush and thus some of the economic interpretation may not be completely accurate. Abstract Leasing has traditionally been one of the tools that firm employs to increase market share. It is not intuitive that this strategy would actually be beneficial. It is certainly not true if we consider only perishable goods. However, there are good...

Optimal Dynamic Choice of Durable and Perishable Goods

We analyze the life cycle consumption choice model for multiple goods, focusing on the distinction between durables and perishables. As an approximation of the fact that rather high transaction costs and market imperfections prevail inmarkets for used durables, we assume that investment in durables is irreversible. In contrast to the additive model with one perishable good, the optimal consumpt...

Competitive supply of durable goods under stochastic fluctuation in stock

This paper presents a theoretical model in which the stock growth rate of durable goods has stochastic fluctuation over time. It concludes that a social planner increases the expected percentage rate of production since uncertainty increases the user cost from consumer’s point view.

Durable Goods and Sectoral Effects of Monetary Policy

High degree of interest sensitivity of durable goods is now a stylized fact in the literature of monetary policy. This literature, however, does not provide a clear and consensual explanation for the modalities of this stylized fact. In this paper, two independent empirical models are performed to shed more light on the cross-sectoral impacts of monetary policy. The results of first study indic...

Strategic Customer Behavior and the Benefit of Decentralization

In the operations management literature, decentralization is often associated with the double marginalization problem. However, in this chapter, we review several existing papers that demonstrate how decentralization can be beneficial to supply chain performance. A key premise in this literature is that consumers are strategic: They rationally anticipate and respond to future market conditions....
